LAHARI RECORDING COMPANY has evolved under the entrepreneurial spirits of G.Manoharan Naidu, in 1974. With a niche to foresee anything innovative and his effective managerial skills along with the communicative and marketing skills of his brothers Thulasiram (Lahari Velu), Ramesh and Anand, the Company has emerged into one of the top names in the music industry. It has come to be a household name in the whole of South India for its quality music.
Lahari has been a trend-setter in the industry for creating the “Outright Royalty Payment” to Producers, Lyricists and Singers even before the release of Films as against the common industry practice of paying only a 12% share in the profit earned through sales of the pre-recorded music cassettes. In the 1990s, the Company set a record by the outright purchase of audio rights for the Tamil blockbuster movie Thalapathy at Rs. 70 lakhs. Furthermore, the Company, on its 20th Anniversary fixed the price of music cassettes at Rs.20/- which created ripples in the entire Indian music industry. This move was to keep music pirates at bay. Even to this day the price of the Company’s pre-recorded cassettes, CDs, VCDs, MP3 and DVDs is lowest in the industry.
Lahari has a beehive of musical content across all genres and languages. With audio copyrights of over 3000 South Indian movies in its repository, Lahari is the proud audio copyrights owner of some of the biggest blockbuster movies like Thalapathy, Roja, Premaloka, Annamalai, Pelli Sandadi, etc. and recent movies like Power, Race Gurram, Lion, Yatchan, Aagadu, Baahubali and so on, The Company even produced the movie ‘Roja’ in Telugu language. It has and continues to explore the spheres of Carnatic and Hindustani Classical Music (vocal and instrumental), Light Music genres like Devotional Songs, Folklores, Sanskrit Chanting and so on, collectively holding a most unique repertoire of over 65,000 titles.
In its musical stride Lahari has acquired over 10 other music companies. The Company has received an international award for Commercial Prestige and Best Trade Name by the INAME, Mexico, a national marketing Institute promoting marketing and Communications. It has been awarded twice the prestigious Karnataka State Award and several other National and Regional Awards.
Lahari has now ventured into the distribution arena of South Indian Film Industry by purchasing the distribution rights of the film Baahubali in all four languages released and Telugu film Srimanthudu, for Multiplex theatres in the territories of entire Karnataka and Bangalore, respectively.
